How to Point a Domain to Your Hosting Account
If you registered your domain name with a different company than your web host, you will need to "point" the domain to your hosting account so that visitors can see your website. This is done by updating the domain's Nameservers (DNS).
What are Nameservers?
Nameservers are part of the Domain Name System (DNS) that help connect URLs with the IP address of web servers. They essentially tell the internet where your website's files are located.
Step 1: Find Your YallHost Nameservers
When you purchase a hosting plan from YallHost, you will receive a Welcome Email containing your account details, including the Nameservers. They usually look something like this:
ns1.yallhost.comns2.yallhost.com
If you cannot find your Welcome Email, you can view your Nameservers in your YallHost Client Area under the Product Details page.
Step 2: Update Nameservers at Your Domain Registrar
Log in to the company where you registered your domain name (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.) and follow these general steps:
- Navigate to your domain management or DNS settings page.
- Look for an option labeled "Nameservers", "Manage DNS", or "Custom DNS".
- Select the option to use Custom Nameservers.
- Enter the YallHost Nameservers (ns1 and ns2) provided to you.
- Save your changes.
Step 3: Wait for DNS Propagation
After updating your Nameservers, it takes time for the changes to spread across the global internet. This process is called DNS Propagation and can take anywhere from a few hours up to 48 hours to complete.
During this time, your website might be accessible in some locations but not others. Once propagation is complete, your domain will successfully point to your YallHost hosting account.
